About Marina
Marina's dedication to her family and commitment to her profession is truly admirable. She serves as a role model for balancing a successful career and a fulfilling family life while serving others. Marina will bring that same passion for education, dedication, and a servant's heart to the Avon School Board.
Education and Career
- Starting out with an Associates Nursing degree from a community college, Marina's passion for education and continuous learning drove her to earn a Masters in Nursing Education (MSN) from a reputable institution and several years of clinical experience in pediatric and neonatal settings. Today, Marina is a highly skilled Registered Nurse that specializes in instructional education design for rapid project implementations and routine new-hire education for Indiana University (IU) Health. With her strong educational background, Marina brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her career role. Her professionalism and commitment to excellence have made her a valuable asset to the IU Health organization, as evidenced by:

Family
Marina is happily married to John Nelson for over 28 years. John is an Firefighter/EMT with the Brownsburg Fire Department in Brownsburg, Indiana for over 19 years. John loves his career as a public servant, helping Brownsburg community members, homeowners, and businesses during their time of need.
I support our local police and first responders who work tirelessly to serve and protect our communities, as well as the School Resource Officers (SROs) who keep Avon staff and students safe.

Marina has three children who all attended the Avon school district and received a top-notch education. Her oldest son, Lazarus, who has intellectual and physical disabilities, was supported by the district's Special Needs program. This life-changing program encouraged him to reach his fullest potential, including reading, writing, basic mathematics, and self care activities.
MY desire is for ALL Avon students on the abilities spectrum, to receive excellent education and services to help them reach their full potential, just like Lazarus did.

Marina's middle and youngest sons, Samuel and Elijah, participated in the award winning Avon Marching Black & Gold Band throughout high school and attended Area31 Harris Academy Technical programs for Criminal Justice and Aviation Flight their Junior and Senior years. These extracurricular activities provided them with valuable skills and experiences, further enriching their educational journey.
Both of Marina's sons are employed full-time, while attending college, well on their way to successful careers and being productive citizens.
Volunteer Work
Marina also had the honor of volunteering for the Avon Marching Black & Gold Band for 7 years and witnessed the marchers, parents, volunteers, and staff work together, creating amazing performances and lasting friendships. It was an honor to be a box parent to all the marchers in my box, ensuring they were fed, dressed, and in good spirits before competitions and events.
Working with the marchers, parents, and staff while volunteering with the Avon Marching Black & Gold Band provided me a source of JOY and HOPE for our community and students as future leaders.
